Speculative Token Decoupling: Asynchronous Verification via Flash-Decoding
Speculative Flash-Decoding overlaps token proposal and target model verification into non-blocking asynchronous pipeline stages. Lab tests verify 2.8x end-to-end decode speedup on long reasoning chains with zero change in mathematical output distribution.
"Highly effective serving optimization. Delivers 2.4x-2.8x speedup on structured reasoning tasks."
Claims 2.8x latency speedup across all reasoning tasks with zero output deviation.
Holds on coding and math where draft acceptance rate is high (>70%). Drops to 1.4x on open-ended creative writing where acceptance rate falls below 45%.
- Reasoning: Zero degradation; output tokens match target model sampling exactly.
- Quantization: None; works identically across FP16, FP8, and INT4.
- Scaling Limit: Requires draft model to support target model's full context window.
03. The Architectural Paradigm Shift
Standard autoregressive decoding is inherently sequential: generating token N requires loading every parameter tensor from memory before computing token N+1. This results in memory bus underutilization on small batch sizes.
Traditional speculative decoding pairs a small draft model with a large target verifier, but synchronizes both models on every step, wasting compute while the verifier waits for draft proposals.
Speculative Flash-Decoding decouples drafting from verification via an asynchronous ring buffer. The draft model runs continuously ahead, while the target model verifies candidate trees using an optimized split-K attention kernel, achieving near-perfect overlap.
04. Mathematical Formulation
Analytical formulation derived from the paper's first-principles tensor contractions:
Equation 3.1: Standard speculative rejection sampling condition ensuring exact output distribution parity.
Equation 3.2: Expected generated tokens per target model forward verification step.
